Product FAQ

So my hearing is different from other people’s?

Yes, that is correct. No two ears are built the same. Your ears hear sounds differently, the same way we wear different sized shoes, tastes the same dish differently and need glasses. It’s just individual biological differences. Some of us need more bass while others need more treble. Even your left ear can be different from your right.

Why hasn’t my audio gear taken my hearing into account already?

The reason is simple: it’s hard to take into account everybody’s biological differences! It’s much more economical to create headphones with one sound signature and sell that to the market that it is to make one for every set of ears.

Is this the same as EQ?

Yes and no. It uses EQ as one of the tools to tune audio to your ears, the same way top audiophiles spend hours (days even) adjusting their systems to their liking. The difference is our audio-profiling technology—created by our team of audiologists and engineers—takes all the guess work out of what your ears need. That means getting the best audio for your ears in as little as 1 minute, with a clinical trial-verified 97% accuracy.

You may refer to our Tailored Audio and Aumeogram articles for more information.

Where can I read the peer-reviewed medical papers on AUMEO’s technology?

Our audiologists are excited to know you’re interested in their work! Here are the links to the papers:
Clinical evaluation of a computerized self-administered hearing test
J Med Automated hearing screening for preschool children
Unfortunately we are not allowed to distribute the papers ourselves even though we authored them, since the copyright now belongs to the academic publications.  For this reason we can only provide the links to the medical journals, and there may be costs associated to viewing or downloading the papers.

What do I need to have before using AUMEO?

To start using AUMEO, you’ll need to have an Aumeo (make sure it’s been charged before hand for at least 15 minutes), an iPhone or Android phone, and a pair of wired headphones. You’ll also need to download Aumeo’s companion app, AumeoHub.

Where can I download the app for AUMEO?

AUMEO’s companion app is called Aumeohub. You can download it from the App Store and Google Play. The app also works on iPads and Android tablets.

How do I start using AUMEO?

You can see our Quick Start Guide to start setting up your Aumeo. The Quick Start Guide (titled “Let’s get started”) can be found in Aumeo’s packaging. You can also download the PDF of the Quick Start Guide here.

Please note that for the app to upload your audio profile to Aumeo, Aumeo must be connected with the phone via Bluetooth. You can enjoy your music with other audio sources via line-in after this setup process.

How can I connect AUMEO with the app through Bluetooth?

Here are the steps to connecting AUMEO to the app via Bluetooth:

Make sure AUMEO is powered off

Check that the wireless switch on the side (the one farther from the round volume dial) is in Bluetooth pairing position

Press the power button on the side (the one closer to the round volume dial) and hold until 3 lights in the front flash red

Open your phone’s settings and select AUMEO among the discoverable devices

Open the app now and you will see that AUMEO has been successfully connected to the app, AumeoHub

How can I toggle the AUMEO effect and tailor music to my ears?

Once you have measured your ears through Aumeo’s app AumeoHub, your audio profile will have been uploaded to Aumeo, the device and the sound will automatically be tailored to your ears.
To toggle the tailoring effect, press the flat part of the volume dial like a button. When the Aumeo effect is on and sound is tailored to your ears, 6 lights glow white when the volume dial is pressed. When the Aumeo effect is off, 3 lights will glow red when pressed.

How do I connect AUMEO with an audio source using Bluetooth?

The process of connecting AUMEO with an audio source using Bluetooth is similar to pairing AUMEO with your phone.

1. Make sure AUMEO is powered off

2. Check that the wireless switch on the side (the one farther from the round volume dial) is in Bluetooth pairing position

3. Press the power button on the side (the one closer to the round volume dial) and hold until 3 lights in the front flash red

4. Open your audio source’s Bluetooth settings and select AUMEO among the discoverable devices

How do I connect AUMEO with an audio source using line-in?

If you want to connect your Aumeo with your audio source using a 3.5mm audio cable, please follow these steps:

1. Check that the wireless switch on the side of Aumeo (the one farther from the round volume dial) is NOT in Bluetooth pairing position

2. Connect Aumeo with your audio source with a 3.5mm audio cable via the audio input port located at the base on the device.

How do I see my audio profiles?

To see your existing audio profiles, tap on the menu button on the top left of the app (AumeoHub) and select “MY AUDIO PROFILES”.

How do I choose another audio profile?

To upload a different audio profile from your existing audio profiles, first make sure your AUMEO is wirelessly paired with your phone via Bluetooth. Tap on the menu button on the top left of AumeoHub and select “MY AUDIO PROFILES”. Then, tap into the audio profile you want to upload, and then the word “Apply” in the bottom right of the screen. The selected profile should then be uploaded to AUMEO.

How can I make sure my results are accurate?

To make sure your audio profile accurately reflects your ears’ sensitivity, we recommend measuring them with AUMEO and AumeoHub in a quiet room. You may also want to make a new audio profile every 6 months to ensure your audio profile reflects any changes in your hearing.

You may refer to our Aumeogram article and published
published medical papers for more background information.

How can I make audio profiles for different headphones?

You can make an audio profile for each set of headphones. Or, if you’d like to preserve their sound signatures (for example, you want audio tailored to your ears but also want to enjoy the heavier bass a specific set of headphones offer), you can use a set of headphones with a flat sound signature to make one standardized audio profile to use with all your other headphones.

How often do I have to make audio profiles?

Technically you only have to make an audio profile once and use it indefinitely. However, our ears, like the rest of our body, changes with time. To ensure your audio profile accurately reflect these changes, we recommend making a new audio profile every six months.

Can I use AUMEO when it has someone else’s audio profile on it?

We do not recommend it as different people ears’ have different sensitivity. It would be like wearing someone else’s shoes—it would likely be a bad fit and make for a subpar, uncomfortable audio experience. Instead we suggest switching audio profiles when you are sharing an AUMEO with someone else.

Can I use AUMEO with Bluetooth headphones?

No, as AUMEO’s audio output requires a 3.5mm audio cable and cannot connect with Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Please use wired headphones and wired speakers instead.

What are AUMEO’s specifications?

Here are Aumeo’s specifications:
Bluetooth range: 10 meters
Effective frequency response: 50Hz-20kHz
Impedance: 16 ohms
Max output: 100 mW
Sensitivity: 96 dB

What’s the effective frequency range of AUMEO’s EQ, and how much can it amplify or attenuate at different frequencies?

AUMEO’s effective frequency range is from 50Hz-20kHz, though we are measuring only 8 points from 125Hz to 12.5kHz in the hardware during calibration. The rest of the points will be “predicted” from the existing medical data for hearing print patterns, as we’d like to save time for the user so the test wouldn’t take longer than necessary. Our amplification is around 25dB max on each of the frequencies.

You may refer to our Aumeogram article for more background information.

Can I share AUMEO with other people?

Yes you can, but please make sure your own audio profile is uploaded to the device first, as everybody has different audio profiles. You can create and store multiple audio profiles on AumeoHub.

Can I use AUMEO for phone conversations?

Yes you can, if there is a microphone on the wired headphones you’re using with AUMEO.

I have hearing loss. Can I use AUMEO?

AUMEO can improve your audio experience if you have mild to moderate hearing loss (below 70 dB), but it is not a substitute for hearing aids. We also can’t help with nerve deafness. Please consult your doctor before using AUMEO.
